The little house is kind of falling apart but it's got lots of character, no denying that. This time last year someone came and annihilated ALL of those plants and bushes around the house. AH! Terribly. I actually cried. Luckily we were gone for the spring and summer so they sort of grew back, a little bit. But all of February it was all barren and depressing, with no privacy. Manicured lawns are really overrated. And the guy who went scissors happy with my poor plants better stay far away this year!
Some serious blog neglection going on, yeah? It's not my fault! Here's some obligatory foodporn photos from Thanksgiving. I made veggie sushi last year and the year before that was a bottle of wine and vegan pizza that I ate solo.
So this year I decided to put a bit more effort in and made some tasty treats (all vegan, of course of course). Pumpkin coconut muffins, baba ganoush with pita bread, grilled asparagus and corn, chive(d) mashed potatoes and tofu pot pie (which turned out way too good, actually). Dessert was homemade sweet potato ice cream with toasted coconut. Tasty treats, indeed!
I looked outside the window and saw these bad boys coming in. You'd think they were rain clouds, right? Wrong! It didn't rain until a few weeks later, very inappropriate timing since I had a booth/tent setup at the Texas Reds Festival. Oh man. It's been a while since I've been around these parts, huh? I guess that's what happens when internet access isn't in the palm of your hand. Hoping that'll change soon but it's not looking so hot. I just got done with the field season (great season, totally bittersweet ending) and am all edgy from adjusting back into society and civilization and all that stuff...always a struggle, really.
Petrified wood from the backyard creek. This stuff is pretty plentiful but it never fails to excite me. I have a pretty hefty hoard of it now, this is just my latest find. (with my pet resurrection fern!) My geologist friend told me the petrified wood around here is usually 10-30 million years old. So cool.Johnny Nutcasehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08429848435564779353noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1350230122432828965.post-60231419374900273962013-02-15T13:32:00.000-08:002013-02-15T13:32:04.094-08:00Magic Potions

Ohh yeah. I busted out the juicer this week, after a much too long hiatus. I stocked up on some tasty fruits and veggies and have been making carrot-apple-beet-kale juice every day. YUM! Magic stuff. I've been saving the pulp and giving the horses that as a treat/snack. They freaking love it (some more than others) and it makes it a litte easier to round 'em up if I dont have a halter on me, ha!
This is my toad friend from a few months back. He was hanging out in one of my lettuce containers for a few days, hiding out underneath this old box turtle shell I found. I wish he would have hung around longer! (pretty sure it's a gulf coast toad) Camera Critters

Kitchen window flowers! I found all the bottles (there are a handful more on the table) except the red one, in the Texas Hill Country. The middle one is an old chili bottle, kinda cool. I realize the bottles are just plain old litter, but after a maniacal cleaning, they kind of get the job done. And the way that afternoon light hits the bottles ...yum! Today's Flowers NF Blo-MaJohnny Nutcasehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08429848435564779353noreply@blogger.com14tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1350230122432828965.post-72627785559906449972012-12-05T10:08:00.000-08:002012-12-07T12:36:52.099-08:00

I'm a tea fanatic, especially when it comes to jasmine loose leaf. I finally had the Numi flowering tea recently, at a little Japanese tea house in San Antonio with my parents. My mom and I practically chugged the pot of tea. Unfortunately, Numi is a little insane on their prices with their flowering teas, so I'm going to stick to my regular loose jasmine I get at the Asian market. Just as good, just doesn't look quite as pretty! Abc Wednesday Weekend Reflections

Broccoli! Planted it a couple months ago (it's in one of the clay pots in the second photo) and it's actually flowering, yeehaw! Really pretty happy about this because I had my doubts. The brussel sprouts are still hanging in there and the plant looks healthy but it's not doing anything too exciting. The lettuce is still thriving nicely. Replanted a couple of them in the ground and they are looking better already.
Everything else (succulents in tiny gourds and cacti, mainly) is doing well. My prickly pear sprouted another hand a couple months ago and it got out of control rather quickly. I should take an updated photo- it's much bigger than the main guy now.
I'm going to plant some chives and parsley today I think, and I've got some snow peas, cabbage and more greens I want to try too. Luckily we don't get many freezes here and stuff grows pretty easily most of the year. Our World Tuesday
I've got some extra time on my hands right now so I figured, awww hell, why not start a third blog- how dorky, right? Mmhmm. I've been cooking more than normal lately and having fun with it, so thought maybe I could be one of these people who takes photos of their food. And stuff. ...which, honestly, I always thought was kind of weird, but alas, maybe now I understand.

So, I made some veggie sushi last week, full of spicy baked tofu, carrots, avocado (gotta have avocado), green onions, and sauteed zucchini. Don't forget the gomasio and jasmine tea. I hadn't made sushi in a really long time, which is ridiculous, because I actually really like making it and can eat pounds and pounds of veggie sushi. It might even be a problem, I dunno.

Also noteworthy: the entire time I was making this, I was watching the Panda Cam - if you're ever having a bad day, this is the cure.
